Is your domain name safe? Or could someone else steal it?

Recently I went to a friend's website to see that it was not his site design.  I checked with the domain name registry ( I use godaddy.org ) and found that his website name was now owned by a British company.  Now his email addresses weren't working and no one could find his information on the web.

What happened?  He switched website providers a few times and did not keep track of his domain name (url) himself.  He trusted that the website providers were tracking his domain but they were only pointing his domain name to their services.

In the switching around, no one noticed that his domain name was expiring.  As soon as it expired, that British company purchased the name.  There are companies like that company who watch for expired names to come up and purchase them so the ORIGINAL company has to buy their own name back AT AN INFLATED PRICE!

If you have your own website you need to protect yourself.  Go to www.godaddy.org and search on your domain name.  It should say it is NOT available but "Get Info"  Check to make sure your name is in one of those contacts and make sure your email addresses are valid.  If not, you will need to log into whoever you are using to manage your urls (godaddy.org, network solutions, etc) and make the necessary changes.
